Your Q4 Marketing Check-In: What to Fix Before 2027 Planning

Before you build next year's marketing plan, take a hard look at what's working today. From campaign performance and website conversions to content gaps and lead tracking, Q4 is the ideal time to fix issues that could derail your 2027 strategy.

September has a way of sneaking up on us. The campaigns that launched at the beginning of the year have been running for months. Budgets have been spent. Reports have been reviewed. And before we know it, conversations about 2027 goals and budgets will begin.

But before jumping into next year’s planning, there’s an important question worth asking:

What has 2026 taught us so far?

September is an ideal time to take a hard look at your marketing strategy—not simply to report on what happened, but to identify what should change during the final months of the year and what those lessons mean for 2027. Here are five areas worth reviewing.

1. Look Beyond the Headline Metrics

Impressions, clicks and engagement rates are useful indicators, but they don’t always tell us whether marketing is accomplishing the larger business objective. Take a step further.

Which campaigns are generating qualified leads, applications, appointments, inquiries or other meaningful actions? Which audiences are responding? Which markets are performing differently than expected?

The goal isn’t more data. It’s finding the data that helps you make a better decision.

2. Revisit Your Media Mix

Your media plan was built using the best information available when the year began. Nine months later, you have something even better: actual performance data. That makes September a good time to ask whether your budget is still working as hard as it could.

Some channels may deserve additional investment. Others may need to be adjusted. You may discover an audience or geography outperforming expectations—or one that simply isn’t responding.

A media plan shouldn’t be static. The strongest strategies evolve as we learn.

3. Check for Creative Fatigue

Even great creative has a shelf life.

When audiences see the same imagery, headlines and calls to action repeatedly, performance can begin to decline. And because your internal team sees your advertising far more often than your audience does, creative fatigue isn’t always obvious.

Look at performance over time. Are engagement or response rates beginning to soften? Has frequency increased significantly? Have your messages changed as your audience moves through the decision-making process?

Sometimes improving campaign performance doesn’t require changing the media strategy. It simply requires giving the audience something new to notice.

4. Ask What Has Changed

Markets don’t stand still—and neither do consumers. Your competitors may have changed their strategy. Search behavior may have shifted. New technology may be influencing how people discover and evaluate brands. Your own organization may have introduced new priorities, services or goals.

A strategy that made perfect sense in January may need a different approach in September. Rather than asking, “Are we following the plan?” ask, “Does the plan still make sense?”

That’s a much more valuable question.

5. Start 2027 Planning With Evidence, Not Assumptions

Perhaps the biggest opportunity in a September marketing review isn’t what it can change this year. It’s what it can teach you about next year.

Annual marketing plans often begin with last year’s budget and strategy and make incremental adjustments from there. But your 2026 performance data gives you an opportunity to start somewhere better.

  • What should you do more of?
  • What should you stop doing?
  • Where did you underestimate an opportunity?
  • Where are you spending money without seeing enough return?

And what should you test now so you have better information before committing significant dollars in 2027?

The answers should become the foundation of next year’s strategy.

Don’t Wait for January to Make a Change

There are still several months left in 2026. That’s enough time to optimize campaigns, refresh creative, shift investments and test new ideas. More importantly, it’s enough time to learn.

At Central States Marketing, we believe reporting should do more than explain what already happened. It should help determine what happens next.

So before 2027 planning gets underway, take a moment to look back at the year—not simply to measure it, but to learn from it. We are happy to help!

Because the best marketing plans aren’t built on what we think will work. They’re built on what we’ve learned.
